July 12, 2014 - It is 5 after 5pm and Amateur Night at the Apollo Boston Auditions have just finished. Myself and contestant liaison Kathy Sharpton are packing up to leave when in runs a young girl, about fifteen years old, out of breath and asking if she could still audition.  I say "I'm sorry, but we are done for the day."  She does an about face and walks out the door and we continue gathering our things. Maybe 30 seconds later, the same girl comes back in and says, "Please sir, please.  May I have just one minute of your time?"  Surprised by her supplication, I turn to her and say "You know, stories like this often have a great ending. Ok, lets do it!"  She smiles, places her things on a nearby chair as I ask her what she does. "I play piano and sing," she says.  We clear space and she goes to the piano (which I might add is not usually part of our set up and just happens to be in the room).

She sits down to play and out of her mouth comes "For All We Know" by Donny Hathaway, singing in a most beautiful voice while accompanying herself on piano.   Big deal, you say? Maybe it is.  You see, this young lady only has a left arm.  The right arm is cut off just below the elbow and she is playing melody and chords and singing!

After about two minutes of melody, song and, well, awe ... she finishes. Ms. Kathy and I give each other "the look” and smile inside.  I turn to the young girl, and say "Well, your story does have a great ending because you will perform at the world famous Apollo Theater very soon!"

The young lady's name is Victoria Canal and she is from Barcelona, Spain. She performed on August 6 and won First Place in the Child Stars of Tomorrow segment.  She will return on September 3, 2014 for her Show-Off Performance! ...and the story shall continue!
